Despite growing up on opposite sides of Canada, Don McIntyre and Mike Dangeli were taught two histories of the ‘British Invasion’. Don McIntyre, an Ojibway from Timiskaming First Nation and Mike Dangeli , a Nisga’a, Tlingit, Tsimshian of Gingoluth, found that their teachings contained mixed messages. We were taught to understand the term “British Invasion” as an attack by the colonialists on the Indigenous peoples. At the same time, we were introduced by our Elders to the British Invasion of the Beatles. Their music resonates throughout Reserves to this day. As children we listened to our Parents and Grandparents; Aunties and Uncles singing these songs at work and at play. This music became part of our Indigenous experience. We celebrate the influence that the British Invasion of the Beatles had on generations of North Americans (both on and off Reserve). We continue to challenge the British colonial invasion in our art, stories and song. Abbey Road Red is an exploration of these two divergent worlds of British Invasion through the eyes of Aboriginal artists.
